When Purim falls on a Friday, the timing of the Seudah can be tricky, as we don't want to diminish our appetite for the Friday night Shabbat Seudah. While it is therefore ideal to eat the Purim seudah before halachik noon, Halacha does provide an alternative approach through which the Purim and Friday night meals essentially become one, known as “Pores Mapah U’Mikadesh” (spreading a cloth and reciting Kiddush). Please click here to read #4 in our Halacha How-tos for more info.

The BDJ YPs warmly invite everyone to join for a community meal that will start with the Purim Seudah before Shabbat and continue with the Shabbat meal after davening. There will also be a live Purim Shpiel written and performed by YPs!

A question that has come up: “What if I can’t stay all the way through the end of the Friday night Seudah? Is it OK to leave early?”
If you’d like to capture the main halachik benefit of this arrangement, i.e. of being able to have a Purim Seudah late on a Friday afternoon without running up against the Halachik concern about having spoiled our appetite for the Shabbat meal, then you’ll need to stay long enough to hear kiddush and to eat additional bread at the outset of the Shabbat portion of the evening. If this is what you’ll be doing, you should have in mind when you wash for hamotzi (at the beginning of the Purim Seudah) that you will be bentching on your own rather than with the group.
