I’d spent most of my life in New York before I moved to Los Angeles for a job at HBO. Having been involved with fantastic communities while I was growing up on the Upper West Side and studying at NYU, I was looking for a dynamic group of people with whom I could connect religiously and in many other ways – admittedly, the bar was set pretty high. I arrived at B’nai David and was welcomed by a multi-generational group of deeply engaged Jews who continue to enhance my Shabbatot and holidays with their exceptional hospitality. In Rav Yosef, the shul has a leader who truly exemplifies the values of Torah im derech eretz, the highest compliment a German Jew like me can bestow. Rav Yosef also enjoys engaging all the shul’s members in the holy work of supporting our community, encouraging both newcomers and regulars to get involved in the many programs and classes that take place throughout the week. In fact, that’s how I, somewhat to my own surprise, became one of our gabbaim. Crucially, my cohort at B’nai David also shares my love of scotch, commitment to triathlon training, and passion for esoteric discussions of the various roles that God, halacha, and Entertainment Weekly play in our lives.
