Retired (or close to retirement), my wife Susan and I moved to California a little over 5 years ago to be near our family. We sampled the local Modern Orthodox Synagogues, and the combination of liking the religious services, Susan’s invitation to carry the Torah, and the warm hospitality of the BDJ members made the decision to join BDJ an easy one. Since then, we have expanded our BDJ resumes to include daily minyan, being the Lollipop Lady, the Board, and the security committee. Every new responsibility brought us closer to new and deeper friendships across the age spectrum. Maybe we aren’t exactly “old timers” to LA yet but we have learned how to say, “We never used to have weather like this before!”
This year, I joined the Executive Committee as Vice President of House. B’nai David-Judea’s home is an exquisite, Art Deco, historic, former grand theatre. “Historic” is a more charming way of describing BDJ’s building than by saying it is “old.” (The building is even older than I am, if you can believe that.) Along with the building’s charm, beauty, and ample space comes many building maintenance and security issues, which with the assistance of other members and our excellent custodial staff I happily volunteered to help solve over the few years to make BDJ a comfortable home for our community.
Our beautiful building may be temporarily closed, but over the past several months we have worked with our dedicated maintenance staff to ensure that when we do return, our space will be better than ever. Thanks to a Homeland Security grant, we have implemented several security upgrades as well. Your continued support is vital to all the work we do. Please renew your membership today!
