When a public figure is discovered to have violated community trust, he/she will often make a public apology and ask to be reaccepted into the community on the basis of teshuvah. We will see how our religious literature has one set of criteria for what is required to be forgiven by God, and how halakha has a different set of criteria for what’s required to restore trust.
