Bnai David-Judea’s women’s tefila program, Shirat Chana, began more than 10 years ago. It grew out of a desire on the part of the women of BDJ to be able to fully engage with the Torah and with prayer in a halachic Orthodox context. Shirat Chana has about 12 events per year. In addition to a mincha program (which includes text study), women gather on occasion on Shabbat morning for Sunrise Shirat Chana, which includes Shacharit and Torah reading.
Our Shirat Chana program hosts three special events each year: On Purim, we have a women's Megillah reading; on Shavuot, we have a narrated reading of Megillat Ruth; and on Simchat Torah, we meet for Torah reading, dancing, and Torah study. Furthermore, we offer girls the opportunity to celebrate their bat mitzvah with us. They may read the torah, lead the tefillah and/or share words of torah either in the morning or the afternoon.
