CAMP BDJ - update March 12, 2004
Have you been to Camp BDJ yet?
Its been a surprisingly wonderful experience. Friday
night davening has never been more energetic. The 100 or so
people who come Friday night fill the small space at the Workmens
Circle gallery with intense and joyous song to welcome in
the Shabbat. (The socialist literature and the off-beat art
only add to the experience).
Shabbat morning at Canfield Elementary Shul has that same
sense of intensity and proximity as we sit closer to each
other than ever before and really hear and appreciate each
others voices in prayer (in conversation, however
).
We have been blessed with beautiful weather, so the children
have all loved being outdoors not only for playing, but for
davening, study and snack as well.
Even our daily minyan crowd has joined into the spirit of
campy improvisation. Our 80 and 90-year-old friends, the stalwarts
of daily minyan, do not let a thing like a steep and long
flight of stairs at Chabad one that winds even the
hardiest among us stop them from attending daily minyan.
Meanwhile, our project has begun. We have reached to the
end of the lead and asbestos abatement phase. Many of you
may have seen the workers dressed in space suits hanging onto
cherry pickers in front of the building. That process is finished.
Last week we received three bids from contractors, and we
have narrowed it down to Sam Shafer. Shafer has worked on
synagogue projects before and has also worked with Naomi Langer.
He is excited about doing this job, and we are all confident
that he is the right match for us.
Next week Shafer will submit a revised bid, reflecting some
preliminary feedback from Amram, Naomi Langer and the project
manager. Once that bid is finalized and we have hard numbers
to work with, we will begin the difficult process of taking
our dream project, with all the elements we desired, and narrowing
it down to something that fits our budget.
We are also close to securing a bank loan, which will give
us the necessary cash to cover our costs as pledges are paid
out over five years.
Fundraising continues, with our total now up to $2.18 million.
