WE NEED YOU . . .
THAT'S RIGHT, YOU!
As you know, our shul's annual dinner is only a couple of weeks away.
It promises to be a fun and inspiring way to celebrate the past 60 years in the shul's history AND to help provide much needed funds for the shul's many spiritual, educational and communal activities.
However, on both counts, we really need 100% PARTICIPATION. The evening won't be complete without each and every one of you there, and the fundraising component -- which is absolutely crucial to the shul -- needs everyone's commitment.
If you haven't RSVP'd (or, if you can't make it but haven't yet pledged your financial support for the event), please contact Amram this week.
We look forward to celebrating with you on June 1 and to enjoying the fruits of the monies raised at the dinner throughout the year.
Good Shabbos, Sheldon & Fred
"WHAT'S GOIN' DOWN IN SHUL?" HOW TO
Though I received no articulated responses to last week's closing question, I know that many of you were thinking about it all week, and I appreciate that!
So here's what I think might be the answer:
(Just to recap the question: When we see the writing in the Torah as it is lifted during Hagbah, we say the verse "V'zot HaTorah....b'yad Moshe". Only problem is that there is no such verse in the Torah. The first part, through the words "Lifnai Bnai Yisrael" appears in Devarim, while the fragment "Al Pey Hashem B'yad Moshe" comes from the book of Bamidbar. So how did our practice come about?)
I have long thought (just my conjecture) that the original practice may have been a "call and response" formula, as we find so often in our liturgy (e.g. at the beginning of benching, or at the "hodu" section of Hallel). I can imagine that as the Torah was lifted for all to see the writing therein, there was a "call and response" affirmation of our basic beliefs about this Torah and this writing. Perhaps the gabbai would have begun by affirming our historical belief about the Torah, by proclaiming the verse from Devarim "this is the [selfsame] Torah that Moshe placed before the Children of Israel", and then - in response - the congregation would affirm our theological belief concerning the Torah by proclaiming the words from Bamidbar, "by the mouth of God, at the hand of Moshe". I can further imagine that over time, as often happens, the congregation began to jump the gun and join in with the gabbai, and the "call and response” became one continuous congregational statement (and then song).
Probably this is similar to the solution you came up with too, so I apologize for the redundancy.
In any case, I am hopeful that all of the foregoing will create an opportunity for us to focus on this dramatic and affirming moment in the tefilla.

A note to nursing mothers
Balancing the needs of an entire congregation is just about the hardest part of shul life. The policy that Rav Yosef decided upon several years ago is that while we value every person's participation in davening, nursing should not be done in the sanctuary. When we renovated the shul, we upgraded the anteroom to the women's bathroom for the purpose of accommodating nursing mothers. As of this morning, we are also making the conference room within the office available to nursing mothers exclusively. The door to the office will be unlocked during davening, and Amram has prepared the room for this purpose. (The conference room is in the inner part of the office, to the right and down the short hallway form Amram's office.) Thanks to all.

As the entire people of Israel pray for their freedom. May they ne guard and protect them, deliver them from distress to comfort, from darkness to light, and speedily return them in peace to their families and their people. May this be God’s will, and we say, Amen.

Having an aliya?
In order to keep laining moving at a pleasant clip, lease arrive on the Bima at the end of the previous aliya. Following your aliya, the gabbai will recite a Misheberach for you and for your family "mishpachto"). Please do not request that the gabbai list your family names individually however. When we extend the Misheberachs in this way, we lose the kahal's attention. THANK OU!
